Smudging is the ancient tribal tradition of using bunches of smouldering herbs to create peace and harmony. It is used for cleansing, purification, protection of spiritual and physical bodies, banishment of negative energies and the creation of sacred space. The most traditional, or well known herb that is used for smudging is White Sage (Salvia apiana) - sometimes known as Bee sage. This is a Californian herb that doesn't grow well in the UK but you can buy it on-line quite readily if you wish to use this. (Be sure it is from the Salvia family and not from the Artemisia family, as this is not a true Sage). I personally avoid White Sage from an environmentally conscious point of view. Unfortunately, the demand for white sage from the "new age" market has resulted in Salvia apiana becoming an endangered plant species. Any of the plants in the True Sage (Salvia) family can be used for smudging and as I personally prefer to use plants from my own garden I use Common or Garden Sage (Salvia officinalis).
Although the most traditional, Sage is not the only plant that can be used. As in aromatherapy, different plants have different properties and it is good to have variety in life! I make Smudge Sticks from Common/Garden Sage, Lavender, Rose, Bay and Rosemary as and when they are available and the plants are willing. If any customer is trying to invoke a particular energy, I will make bespoke smudge sticks that fit their requirements.
Smudge sticks are made to order, please let me know what you would like and if available, your smudge stick will be available in 2-3 weeks.
